Since 2015, the British public has
seen a revolving door of faces representing them at the very top. But why? Over
the past ten years, Britain has gone through six different Prime Ministers,
some lasting only a few months or a year, and all resigning before the end of
their official terms.
It is sarcastically funny that
"Great Britain"—which for centuries boasted that the sun never sets
on its empire—cannot even maintain a stable Prime Minister today. Finding a
leader who lasts has become as rare as catching a glimpse of an actual sunrise
in the British weather.
So, what is the reason behind this
constant instability? It cannot be denied that immigration and anti-immigrant
sentiments have played a massive role in these dramatic resignations. From
David Cameron all the way to Keir Starmer, these Prime Ministers have collided
with the messy realities of Brexit, its subsequent failures, and the fierce
anti-immigration backlash that continues to rise across the UK.
The Collapse of the "Boring" Era
The latest casualty is Keir
Starmer, who won a historic "loveless landslide" in 2024, promising to
make politics "boring" again, only to resign following tanking
popularity, internal party civil war, and a massive scandal involving a controversial
diplomatic appointment. In December 2024, Starmer appointed Peter Mandelson—a
towering figure in the Labour Party and former Cabinet minister—as the British
Ambassador to the United States. This appointment was done just right before
the scandal broke. However, the subsequent outburst of the Jeffrey Epstein
files, which unmasked many high-profile names, heavily implicated Mandelson.
Most political leaders are famous
for their Olympic-level "U-turn" traits, and Starmer was no
exception. He famously backtracked on welfare schemes, such as the
controversial two-child benefit cap that restricts government financial aid for
couples with more than two children.
Meanwhile, the economic masterminds
behind Brexit originally thought leaving the European Union would unleash
unbridled growth. The reality? Post-COVID and post-Brexit, the UK economy has
spent years dragging its feet through stagnation. Instead of the economic graph
going up, it has steadily trended downward.
The Bitter Irony of "Go Back to Your Country"
Whenever there is political
instability in the UK, the conversation is incomplete without blaming
immigrants, as if every national crisis is entirely their fault.
Unfortunately, a glaring and
historical truth is forgotten by the British public. The British Empire once
ruled over the globe for centuries under the guise of "civilizing"
the world's oldest civilizations. Today, the UK has completely forgotten the
history of slogans like "Simon Go Back"—when colonized people
demanded the British leave their lands—and has ironically flipped the script,
loudly telling modern migrants to "go back to your country."
While immigration and the fiery
rhetoric surrounding it have been a massive fuel source for this chaotic
bonfire, the deeper instability remains a toxic mix of ideological civil war,
economic reality checks, and spectacular political self-sabotage.
