Being told about an experience of sexual violence can be overwhelming. But how you respond can significantly impact a survivor's recovery journey.

What to Say

'I believe you.' These three words can be transformative. Follow them with: 'It's not your fault,' 'Thank you for trusting me,' and 'How can I support you?'

What NOT to Do

Never ask what they were wearing, why they didn't fight back, or why they didn't report sooner. These questions shift blame onto the survivor.

Provide information about helplines, counseling services, and legal options, but let the survivor make their own decisions about next steps.
